UK Ports Launch Drive-Through Facial Recognition for Border Crossings

The UK government is trialing facial recognition technology at four ports, enabling British travelers to pass border control without exiting their vehicles by matching faces to passport images. Tested from November 2024 and including vehicle passenger scanning trials by Border Force from December 2024 to February 2025, the system aims to create automated “contactless corridors,” significantly cutting queues during peak travel periods. Initially targeting maritime and rail routes, it will later expand to air travel, aligning with the EU’s Entry/Exit System launching in October. Officials anticipate full deployment within a year as part of a broader digital immigration initiative.
