The UK government has taken a significant step forward in shaping the future of digital identity with the formation of a new All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Digital ID. The group has issued a call for identity providers to contribute insights regarding the GOV.UK wallet initiative and the recent certification of One Login against the Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework”>Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF).
The news comes as the UK continues to expand its digital identity infrastructure, with the recent announcement of digital driving licenses set to launch through the GOV.UK One Login system. The One Login platform has already successfully integrated 50 government services into a unified digital platform.
The APPG’s consultation is particularly timely, as it follows ongoing debates about the scope of government digital identity services. Last year, the oix-urges-uk-to-let-private-sector-handle-its-own-digital-ids/”>Open Identity Exchange (OIX) advised against expanding One Login to the private sector, highlighting the complex considerations surrounding digital identity management in the UK.
The consultation will focus specifically on two key elements: the GOV.UK wallet, which will enable citizens to store digital versions of official documents, and the One Login system’s certification against the DIATF. The framework, whose development was led by key architects within the UK government, establishes crucial standards for organizations providing digital identity services.
Iain McCallum, Chair of the APPG on Digital ID, emphasized the group’s commitment to fostering open dialogue on digital identity’s future in the UK. The group aims to develop policies that effectively balance innovation, security, and user privacy while benefiting both citizens and businesses.
The consultation’s outcomes could significantly influence the UK’s approach to digital identity, potentially affecting everything from legislation to the widespread adoption of digital identity solutions across various sectors.
