ATO Mandates Digital ID Verification for Business Tax Services Access

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has implemented mandatory digital identity verification for businesses accessing its online services, requiring them to use the Australian Government Digital ID System. The change affects multiple key business platforms, and represents a significant shift in how companies interact with essential government tax services.

The new requirements apply to several critical business platforms, including Online Services for Business, the Relationship Authorisations Manager (RAM), Access Manager, and the Australian Business Register (ABR). This implementation follows the recent enactment of Australia’s Digital ID Act 2024, which established the national framework for digital identity verification across government services.

Under the new system, users will encounter two authentication screens when logging in. The first allows selection of a Digital ID provider, with myID currently being the only available option. The second screen requests consent for information sharing with the specific online service being accessed.

For businesses requiring regular access, the ATO has implemented a streamlined login option where users can select ‘Remember my choice’ and ‘Yes, remember my consent.’ However, the tax office explicitly warns against using these options on shared devices to maintain security.

The change reflects a broader global trend of government agencies mandating digital ID systems. Similar initiatives have been observed in other countries, such as Malaysia’s recent requirement for digital ID verification in driver services, indicating a worldwide shift toward enhanced digital identity verification in government services.

To ensure security, the ATO emphasizes the importance of accessing services directly through official websites and maintaining proper logout procedures. Users representing businesses must have their identifying documents verified by the issuing provider to create secure profiles, adding an additional layer of authentication to protect sensitive tax information.
