UK Startup Raises £1M to Fight ID Poverty with Biometric Vouching System

UK-based identity verification startup Vouchsafe has secured £1 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round to advance its mission of combating ID poverty. The investment, led by Bethnal Green Ventures, drew support from Biometric Ventures, Fuel Ventures, Seed X Liechtenstein, and angel investor Andrew Chevis.

Vouchsafe’s platform addresses a critical global challenge affecting approximately one billion people who lack reliable photo identification, which often prevents them from accessing essential financial and public services. The company’s “biometric vouching” system allows individuals without traditional photo ID to be verified through a trusted referee who confirms their identity.

The startup’s approach comes at a crucial time, as recent security research has revealed increasing sophisticated attacks on traditional KYC systems, highlighting the need for more secure and inclusive verification methods. Vouchsafe’s solution incorporates face matching and liveness detection technologies to prevent fraud while maintaining accessibility.

As the first identity service provider certified under the UK Digital Identity and Attributes Trust Framework (DIATF) to offer vouching, Vouchsafe is positioned at the forefront of inclusive identity verification.

The new funding will support Vouchsafe’s platform development and market expansion efforts, particularly in the financial and public sectors. The company’s biometric vouching process requires users to take a biometric selfie and nominate a referee, who must verify their own identity and answer questions about the user. This multi-layered approach ensures security while breaking down barriers to essential services for marginalized populations.
