Thales Provides Facial Recognition Tech for AEOS Access Control Solution

The Dutch security specialist Nedap has integrated the Thales Facial Recognition Platform (FRP) into its own AEOS access control solution. The partnership will allow Nedap to meet the growing demand for contactless security solutions that has sprung up in response to COVID-19.

“With Thales, Nedap is able to provide an innovative solution that can be easily integrated with existing infrastructures, allowing for quicker deployment,” said Thales FRP Business Owner Philippe Faure. “The interest in biometrics for secure and contactless authentication is increasing while being reinforced by a new ‘touch-free’ norm in a COVID context.”

AEOS is a physical access control platform that can be used to secure virtually any venue, from offices to airports and everything in between. Once users have been registered in the system, AEOS will be able to verify their identity with a facial recognition scan when they arrive at a point of entry. The system is compliant with the latest GDPR privacy regulations, so all of the data is encrypted and users can ask to have their information deleted if they so desire.

Thales FRP has both connected and disconnected modes, so it can still be used for authentication when the internet is down. System managers will also be able to use the back end to manage the list of registered individuals and monitor authentication requests.   

Nedap previously integrated Suprema’s BioStar 2 solution to bring fingerprint recognition to the AEOS platform. However, the Thales partnership marks the first time that the company has offered facial recognition to its customers.   

“Facial authentication offers [an] improved and hygienic experience for users and smooth and secure people flow management for access managers,” said Nedap Integration Manager Wesley Keegstra.

Thales has repeatedly argued that facial recognition can help venue operators manage crowds and enforce social distancing requirements. That should only increase the appeal of the technology as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
