Aware Names Identity Industry Veteran Ajay Amlani as New CEO

February 5, 2025

Biometric authentication Aware, Inc. has named Ajay Amlani as its new Chief Executive Officer, following the retirement of Robert Eckel in late 2024. The appointment comes after an extensive international search process.Stylized illustration depicting a business meeting or negotiation, with silhouetted figures in blue, orange, and yellow tones conversing around a table in an office setting with large windows and bright lighting.

Amlani joins Aware from iProov, where he served as Head of the Americas for the London-based digital identity company. His extensive background in identity technology includes executive roles at Idemia from 2019 to 2021, where he served as SVP of Corporate Strategy and Development and GM of Commercial Business, establishing key partnerships with mobile manufacturers, fintech companies, and e-commerce platforms.

From 2016 to 2019, Amlani worked under Secretaries of Defense Ash Carter and James Mattis, helping to establish the Defense Innovation Unit, a Department of Defense initiative focused on technology modernization. His entrepreneurial experience includes co-founding the company that would become CLEAR, now serving over 10 million Americans with identity verification services, and founding YOU Technology, a mobile-first identity and loyalty platform reaching 180 million Americans.

Aware, headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, has been operating in the biometric industry for over 30 years, specializing in authentication and identity solutions powered by data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

“After an extensive and highly competitive selection process, we are thrilled to welcome Amlani as our next CEO,” said Brent P. Johnstone, Chairman of the Board at Aware. “His deep industry expertise, visionary leadership, and relentless focus on innovation set him apart.”

Amlani expressed his perspective on the industry’s trajectory: “Today, biometrics are at a critical inflection point, reaching widespread societal acceptance as consumers realize it is possible and highly liberating to achieve the holy grail of convenience combined with superior security.”

Aware’s decision comes at a time when the Security Industry Association has identified the “democratization of identity” as a key trend for 2025, highlighting the growing importance of biometric and decentralized identity systems in the security landscape.

Aware had previously indicated it was trending toward positive operating cash flow in 2024, suggesting that Amlani will be taking the helm of a company with improving financial fundamentals.
