CLEAR’s Contactless Biometric Screening Comes to Nashville Airport

Nashville International Airport has become the 35^th US airport to deploy CLEAR’s touchless biometric scanners. The kiosks went live on August 10, and use iris recognition to verify the identities of passengers as they move through the airport.

An annual CLEAR membership currently goes for $179. The technology is expected to speed up processing times, and to make air travel safer in the wake of COVID-19. Airport officials noted that the pandemic has created an urgent need for contactless technologies. With CLEAR, participating passengers will no longer need to hand travel documents to staff at security checkpoints.

The CLEAR kiosks do offer fingerprint recognition for those who don’t mind using a contact-based form of authentication. However, early reports suggest that most users have opted for the contactless option thus far.

“It’s like the James Bond movies,” said Nashville Airport CEO Doug Kreulen. “As we get through the pandemic, everything’s going to touchless so we don’t have to exchange maybe contaminated documents.”

Passengers can sign up for CLEAR at kiosks that have been installed in the north wing of the Nashville Airport. The airport processed a record number of passengers in February, but overall traffic for the year is down 60 percent due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, CLEAR stressed that it does not sell or share the personal information of its customers.

Some of CLEAR’s most recent airport deployments include Chicago O’Hare International Airport and the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The company has also received regulatory approval for Lambert International Airport in St. Louis.

The World Travel & Tourism Council has previously argued that contactless technology will be vital as airports work to restore public trust in the wake of the pandemic. Nashville is one of several airports that is now moving forward with its digital transformation.
