GigNet is providing the digital infrastructure for a new “Digital Community” in Mexico. The company’s extensive fiberoptic network will bring fast internet, reliable WiFi, and other services to the gated residential community of Puerto Aventuras, which is located in the state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Puerto Aventuras has a standing population of just over 3,000 people, though that number doubles during peak tourism season. The community has three hotels with more than 300 rooms each, and draws guests who come for the Caribbean climate and cultural attractions.
The new fiberoptic network will enable the use of smart home devices like doorbells and other appliances, and allow GigNet to offer a slew of other services, including HD TV and facial recognition. The latter is being delivered through a partnership with TrueFace, and will be used for access control at security checkpoints. GigNet, meanwhile, will open a new sales and customer service office in Puerto Aventuras to provide better service to the local community.
“Personal attention and quality customer service is an important part of the value proposition that GigNet offers,” said Puerto Aventuras owner and developer Román Rivera Torres. “I view GigNet as our partner to help create our combined vision of a ‘Digital Community,’ which will attract new guests, residents, boat owners, and digital nomads to our unique destination.”
Trueface’s technology was previously deployed in the FindMeBahamas app that was used to find survivors in the wake of hurricane Dorian. The company is one of several that has emphasized the need to reduce bias in facial recognition systems.
