Peloton is getting into the wearables game with the release of a new Heart Rate Band. As the name would suggest, the Heart Rate Band is designed to measure someone’s heart rate during a workout, and it is currently available on the Peloton website for a price tag of $90.
The new Heart Rate Band is most obviously geared to toward Peloton customers who subscribe to its workout app, or use its flagship exercise bike and treadmill machines. However, the Band is compatible with third party apps, so it can be used with other workout equipment. In either case, the band uses Bluetooth technology to communicate with other devices.
The band itself is designed to be worn on the upper arm, with LED lights to inform the wearer about their current heart rate and the device’s battery and connection status. The form factor is designed to split the difference between chest and wrist-based monitors, insofar as it is more accurate and more stable than a wrist wearable, and more comfortable than a full chest strap.
In terms of performance, the Band supports the Peloton Strive Score utility to help people stay in a target heart rate zone when they are exercising. The battery, meanwhile, can last for 10 hours before needing to be recharged.
Peloton first indicated that it was working on its own proprietary heart rate monitor back in June of 2021. Even then, the news didn’t come as much of a surprise following Peloton’s acquisition of Atlas Wearables in March of that same year. Atlas is known for its fitness trackers, though many of its designs were wrist wearables.
The Heart Rate Band reflects the growing interest in alternatives to wrist-worn fitness trackers. Huami has unveiled earbuds with a Goodix heart rate sensor, while WHOOP launched a new biometric clothing line in September.
