NEXT Begins Sampling of One Touch ID FAP20 Sensor

NEXT Biometrics has officially started sampling its new One Touch ID FAP 20 fingerprint sensor, the company has announced.

The sensor is compliant with the FAP 20 standard, ensuring that it can be used across a number of government applications. The sensor is based on direct contact with a fingerprint, rather than optical imaging, and NEXT Biometrics says it can operates regardless of lighting conditions and whether a subject’s fingers are dry or wet. Its active sensor area is 0.6″ by 0.8″ and the sensor is under 600 microns thick, offering a compact form factor.

In announcing the sensor’s availability for sampling, NEXT Biometrics CEO Ritu Favre emphasized its applications in government ID, access control, and Point of Sale terminals, which she said “represent multimillion-unit markets that require secure and high-quality sensors.” The new One Touch ID sensor solution “positions NEXT for a leading role in these markets,” she said.

The sensor solution’s launch and its range of target markets points to the breadth of NEXT Biometrics’ business activities. While the company shares its peers’ ambitions of tackling the emerging biometric payment cards market, it has also embarked on partnerships this month with an Indian firm focused on government ID-related eKYC solutions, and an organization specializing in machine-to-machine IoT communications.
