NEXT Biometrics, Infineon Announce Biometric Payment Card Reference Design

NEXT Biometrics and Munich-based Infineon Technologies have teamed up to create a reference design for biometric payment cards, the companies have announced.

Like other emerging biometric payment card solutions, the reference design revolves around fingerprint recognition. It features a built-in fingerprint sensor module and a secure element, as well as an operating system and recommended pre-lamination and lamination methods.

In an announcement of their collaboration, the companies explained that their reference design “incorporates all necessary elements to develop and manufacture a smart card with a fingerprint sensor and helps card makers simplify their production processes and to shorten time-to-market for their offerings.” The companies also asserted that their solution offers False Rejection Rates under one percent.

It’s the latest escalation in an intensifying race between prominent biometrics specialists to develop solutions for the emerging biometric cards market, which NEXT Biometrics has identified as a key one in its business activities. NEXT and Infineon say they will demo their reference design at the APSCA Digital Payments South Asia conference, which will run from November 13th to 14th in Mumbai next week.
