NEC to Update Oman’s Bus Network with Automated Fare System

NEC has landed a contract to update Oman’s public transportation network with an Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) and other smart technology. The use of AFCS tech will allow Omani riders to make contactless fare payments through a new mobile app, and will make transit more efficient for the country’s 20,000 daily commuters.

Meanwhile, NEC’s Automated Vehicle Location System (AVLS) will leverage GPS to enable the government-owned National Transport Company to monitor and maintain its fleet of 200 buses.

“NEC’s sophisticated technologies will make our public transport operations more efficient and raise passenger satisfaction,” said Ahmed Ali Al Bulushi, the CEO of Oman’s National Transport Company. “Our [intelligent transportation system] project will lead efforts for developing a smarter and more efficient bus transportation system in countries throughout the Middle East.”

The new system is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2019 in the hopes that it will start to improve customer service and make Oman’s public transportation more efficient by the end of the year.

The news comes shortly after NEC won a traffic surveillance contract with the city of Gurugram in India, and represents a different application of the company’s investment in smart city tech.
