MSC Cruises has unveiled what it calls the world’s largest and most technologically advanced cruise terminal at PortMiami, featuring biometric technology designed to transform the passenger embarkation experience. The 492,678-square-foot facility, designed by Arquitectonica with construction led by Fincantieri Infrastructure, can process up to 36,000 passengers daily, accommodate three ships simultaneously, and will also serve Explora Journeys, MSC’s luxury brand.
The terminal’s standout feature is its fully integrated biometric journey system, building on MSC’s earlier deployment of facial verification. Passengers validate their identity at 18 biometric face pods and proceed through 22 biometric E-gates, with 20 security lanes ensuring fast, frictionless screening. These upgrades mirror broader industry trends, as seen in similar implementations that have cut disembarkation times by up to 30 percent.
“Every step is carefully streamlined for a stress-free embarkation,” said Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, at the terminal’s ribbon-cutting ceremony. A spacious main lounge with seating for 2,400 and expansive waiting areas flooded with natural light contribute to the passenger-focused experience.
Travelers benefit from a seamless check-in process through the MSC for Me app, which enables document uploads and digital boarding passes. Behind the scenes, an advanced baggage-handling system—developed with Leonardo and incorporating airport-grade cross-belt sorting technology—can manage up to 27,000 pieces of luggage daily. MSC Yacht Club guests enjoy an exclusive lounge with complimentary drinks and snacks.
The terminal also places strong emphasis on sustainability. It has earned LEED Gold Certification and features shore power connections capable of eliminating emissions equivalent to powering 10,000 homes per day per ship. Other eco-conscious elements include water recycling, waste management systems, and the use of sustainable materials.
Art and science converge in the terminal’s public spaces, which showcase seven curated works—including a 10,816-square-foot digital installation visualizing real-time NOAA oceanic data. The building’s wave-inspired architecture also maximizes ground-floor operations to improve passenger flow.
A six-level garage provides over 2,400 parking spaces and covered drop-off zones for taxis, ride-shares, and buses. The terminal will serve as the home port for MSC World America, set to begin operations on April 9, 2025.
The new facility is meant to set a new standard in cruise infrastructure, combining biometric innovation, architectural ambition, and environmental stewardship. It caps years of development in biometric travel systems and sets a new global standard for what the cruise terminal of the future can look like.
