SITA and NEC Partner to Expand Digital Identity Solutions in Air Travel

SITA and NEC Corporation have announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the global adoption of digital identity technologies across the travel industry. The collaboration merges SITA’s extensive air transport IT infrastructure—used in 95 percent of international air travel—with NEC’s advanced biometric and artificial intelligence capabilities to support a more secure, efficient, and interoperable travel experience.

Under the agreement, NEC will integrate its biometric technologies into SITA’s Digital Travel Ecosystem, a privacy-by-design platform built to support seamless, real-time digital identity verification throughout the traveler journey. Developed in partnership with Indicio, the ecosystem includes a Trust Network that allows secure credential exchange without the need for direct integrations between verifiers and issuers—streamlining adoption for airlines, airports, and government agencies.

The initiative follows earlier collaborations between the companies, including their 2021 partnership with Star Alliance to deploy biometric identity solutions across multiple airports. Building on those foundations, the new partnership aims to address key challenges in the industry, including fragmented digital identity systems, interoperability barriers, and the lack of standardized frameworks.

The joint solution leverages NEC’s I:Delight platform alongside SITA’s Smart Path and Flex systems, which are designed to integrate with existing common-use airport infrastructure and airline applications. This makes it possible for airports to implement mobile-enabled, touchless processes—including check-in, bag drop, security screening, boarding, and even lounge access—without costly overhauls of existing systems.

Recent industry data shows that 43 percent of airports are already adopting biometric solutions, and SITA forecasts that boarding times could be reduced by 30 percent while wait times could be cut by up to 60 percent with the use of digital identity systems. These improvements come at a critical time as global passenger volumes are projected to double by 2040, according to IATA.

The initiative also aligns with broader international trends. The European Union is piloting its digital identity wallet, and several countries are developing national digital identity frameworks for secure and interoperable travel. Goode Intelligence projects that 1.27 billion people will use digital identity for travel by 2030.

Privacy and data protection remain central to the SITA–NEC solution. The ecosystem ensures that personal information stays under the traveler’s control and is never stored or shared without consent. This approach complies with international privacy laws, including GDPR, and aligns with rising public expectations for secure, user-centric digital services.
