Vision-Box has been revealed as the technology partner behind the biometric passenger processing system at MSC Cruises’ newly inaugurated Miami terminal, marking a significant milestone in the cruise industry’s digital transformation. The system represents the first end-to-end biometric journey in the cruise sector, streamlining check-in, embarkation, and disembarkation through advanced facial recognition technology.
Vision-Box’s contributions include 18 biometric face pods used to validate travelers’ identities upon arrival, and 22 biometric e-gates for final embarkation, eliminating the need for manual document checks. The systems integrate with the company’s Seamless Journey Platform and connect to third-party infrastructure, including border management and cruise property management systems, enabling real-time data orchestration and significantly reducing boarding times.
The new terminal spans 492,678 square feet and is now the world’s largest cruise terminal, capable of processing up to 36,000 passengers daily and accommodating three ships at once. Passengers can pre-enroll for the biometric journey via the MSC for Me app or MSC Cruises website, uploading travel documents to create a digital identity ahead of arrival.
This deployment builds on Vision-Box’s proven track record in transportation infrastructure, including the implementation of biometric border control systems at international airports. The company, recently acquired by Amadeus, also offers top-ranked biometric algorithms and has extensive experience in large-scale identity verification systems.
Beyond biometric processing, the terminal features 20 security lanes for efficient screening, advanced baggage handling, and dedicated zones for various traveler categories, including MSC Yacht Club lounges. It also incorporates aesthetic and experiential elements, including seven curated artworks commissioned through Miami-Dade County’s Art in Public Places program and a 10,816-square-foot digital installation that displays real-time oceanic data.
Designed by Arquitectonica and constructed by Fincantieri Infrastructure, the six-level facility includes a parking garage with over 2,400 spaces and covered drop-off areas. It will also serve as a future hub for Explora Journeys’ ships, underlining its strategic importance in MSC Group’s long-term growth plans.
MSC Cruises has been gradually advancing its biometric capabilities, having previously integrated facial recognition into its mobile apps. The new Miami terminal marks the culmination of those efforts, setting a new benchmark for passenger experience and operational efficiency in the cruise industry.
