Innovatrics is once again boasting about its strong performance in the Department of Homeland Security’s annual Biometric Rally. The company’s facial recognition technology achieved a top-three score in the 2020 iteration of the rally, and it has now demonstrated the breadth of its portfolio by taking the top spot in the iris recognition test in 2021.
In that regard, Innovatrics was able to identify 97.6 percent of the people who were scanned during its evaluation. That was good enough to beat out the only two other competitors that submitted iris recognition solutions for the test. The high match rating makes the feat impressive despite the thinner competition.
During the test, all three solutions were challenged with 466 images in a high-throughput scenario in which there were no agents on hand to guide people through the capture process. The test was designed to simulate a real-world environment like an airport or a border checkpoint, to demonstrate that iris recognition is quick and accurate enough to verify people’s identities in real time. It is also worth noting that Innovatrics’ system was accurate regardless of demographic factors like race and gender.
The volunteers were not wearing masks during the image capture process. The Biometric Technology Rally is run by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate.
“Our results show that our new iris recognition algorithm is well-suited for real-life situations it is most commonly used for,” said Innovatrics ABIS Business Unit Director Matus Kapusta. “Although considered the most accurate biometric modality, iris recognition is only used in select applications due to expensive hardware and the need for trained staff to supervise the process. However, in use cases such as border control, iris matching provides superior results and virtually zero percent chance of mismatch.”
Innovatrics is one of only a handful of companies that have completed NIST benchmarking with three biometric modalities (the company also offers fingerprint recognition). The latest DHS exam serves as another milestone that attests to the quality of the company’s biometric tech.
