Ideal Innovations Patents Privacy-Perserving International Biometric Authentication System

Ideal Innovations, Inc. (I-3) is hoping to boost its international prospects after receiving a new patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). The patent was formally issued on July 20, and concerns a new International Biometric Identification System (IBIS) that enables secure biometric authentication while still preserving people’s privacy across state lines.

In that regard, the IBIS is geared toward large organizations that have customers and employees in multiple jurisdictions. The system does not send any biometric information across international borders. Instead, the system authenticates each user locally, and sends confirmation of that event back to head office to provide a high level of identity assurance without forcing people to disclose unnecessary personal information.

I-3 designed the IBIS to make it easier for organizations to comply with the different privacy laws they will encounter in different parts of the world. Since the actual biometric data is never transmitted, they can ensure that their data collection practices are compliant with local laws, knowing that there is no risk of accidentally violating another country’s laws when the organization needs to verify someone’s identity in another part of the world.

According to I-3, the IBIS is intended to replace outdated forms of authentication like uniforms and ID cards, both of which can be compromised. The new system allows organizations to realize the benefits of biometric authentication while prioritizing privacy.

“IBIS is a significant step forward with regard to the use of biometrics internationally, in that it provides for identification verification of subjects from different countries without sharing of biometric information between those countries,” said I-3 CEO Bob Kocher. “We imagine applications where partner nations, working in international assistance, humanitarian, and even military operations domains, can rapidly and securely vet individuals from other countries biometrically, without compromising that individual’s personal information.”

I-3 was recently accredited to conduct proficiency tests for those using facial recognition technology.
