Rank One Receives Patent for Passive Biometric Liveness Technology

Rank One has received a US patent for its proprietary passive biometric liveness detection. The method uses micro-texture analysis to confirm the authenticity of a biometric image during the matching process, and is already being used in Rank One’s ROC facial recognition SDK. 

The patent comes courtesy of the US Patent and Trademark Office, while the technology itself is intended to guard against the spoofing of biometric authentication systems. The Rank One system does not require the use of any specialized hardware, and is able to perform the liveness check using only the standard RGB cameras found in smartphones, security cameras, and other devices. It also does so using only a single image or video frame, which minimizes the amount of processing bandwidth needed to carry out the check.

This is the first patent that Rank One has received. The company’s facial recognition technology can be leveraged for access control, and to verify people’s identities when using various online services, including online banking.

In May, Rank One released an updated version of the ROC SDK that came with significant speed and accuracy improvements. The algorithm would later have a strong showing in a recent round of the NIST’s Face Recognition Vendor Test. Rank One’s facial recognition technology has since been integrated into the QuantumCrypt identity solution from Infinity Optics.
