Sumsub Launches Reusable Digital ID Verification on Solana Blockchain

Sumsub has integrated its reusable digital identity product with the Solana Attestation Service, enabling users to link verified Sumsub IDs to Solana wallets for on-chain identity attestations. Demonstrated at Solana Accelerate in May 2025, the integration allows users to verify once and reuse credentials across dApps without revealing personal data. This supports regulatory compliance while enhancing privacy and streamlining onboarding in Web3 environments.

World Partners With Rappi, Expands World ID Availability to Taiwan

World has expanded its digital identity platform with two new initiatives: a partnership with Latin American delivery app Rappi to offer at-home biometric verification in Buenos Aires, and a launch in Taiwan with a World Space in Taipei. The Rappi service delivers a portable biometric scanner, the “Orb,” directly to users, reducing barriers to World ID enrollment. In Taiwan, users can verify via the World App, aligning with local digital governance standards.

UK Police Chiefs Unveil £220M Plan to Expand Facial Recognition Technology

The UK’s refreshed National Policing Digital Strategy for 2025–2030 emphasizes expanded use of biometric technologies, particularly live facial recognition (LFR), and seeks £220 million annually to support deployment. LFR is already yielding around 60 arrests per month and is expected to help save up to 15 million hours of police time. The strategy calls for transparent, ethical use of biometrics, following prior legal challenges. Broader initiatives include AI-driven public contact tools, robotic automation, deepfake detection, and a national digital forensics platform.

SwitchBot Launches Smart Lock with 3D Face Recognition for Home Security

SwitchBot has introduced facial recognition to its smart home lineup with the Lock Ultra Vision Combo, featuring 3D face mapping for fast, secure access. The system supports 18 unlocking methods and stores biometric data locally with AES-128 encryption. Designed as a retrofit, it includes a long-lasting battery system, Matter integration, and infrared support for low-light conditions. Priced at $162.50 during launch, it reflects growing adoption of biometric access in consumer home security.

Vietnam Busts AI-Powered Money Laundering Ring Using Fake Face Scans

Vietnamese authorities have dismantled a money laundering ring that used AI-generated facial deepfakes to bypass biometric banking security, marking the country’s first known case of synthetic identity fraud at this scale. The group laundered an estimated VND1 trillion (US$39 million) over seven months, exploiting facial recognition systems by using fake scans derived from video clips of real people. Around 1,000 bank accounts have been frozen, underscoring the growing threat deepfakes pose to biometric authentication and anti-money laundering systems in financial services.

American Airlines Launches Touchless ID Security at Four Major US Airports

American Airlines has launched its TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program at DCA, LGA, ATL, and SLC airports, allowing eligible travelers to verify identity via facial recognition without presenting physical IDs. The voluntary system, available to AAdvantage members with passports and TSA PreCheck, matches live images to government-held photos. It aims to cut verification times and aligns with TSA’s digital identity goals. Expansion to more airports, including DFW and ORD, is planned as part of a broader move toward contactless air travel.

Lagos Tech Market Launches Mandatory Biometric ID System to Combat Fraud

Computer Village in Lagos, Nigeria, has begun biometric registration for all traders and technicians, requiring participants to submit biometric data and display visible ID cards. The initiative responds to rising security concerns, including theft and fraud, and aims to standardize operations while rebranding the market as a secure tech hub. Additional reforms include bans on wooden kiosks and open flames, restrictions on street setups, and installation of CCTV and emergency systems.

Ethiopia’s Digital ID System Now Integrated Across 55 Key Institutions

Ethiopia has integrated its national digital ID system, Fayda, into 55 public and private sector institutions, allowing citizens to use the ID for services in banking, telecom, and government. Over 15.99 million people are registered, with more than 1,000 enrollment points active nationwide. The initiative is part of Ethiopia’s Digital 2025 strategy, aiming to enroll 90 million citizens by 2027. The government is running public awareness campaigns and partnering with key sectors to expand adoption.

PNG Catholic Church Urges Biometric Voting to Combat Election Violence

The Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea’s Enga Province is urging the government to fast-track the implementation of biometric voting ahead of the 2027 National General Elections. Bishop Justin Soongie of the Wabag Diocese warned that delays could undermine electoral integrity and fuel ongoing violence tied to armed political factions. The call follows stalled progress on earlier government commitments to issue National ID cards by 2025 and introduce biometric voting by 2027.
