SwitchBot Launches Smart Lock with 3D Face Recognition for Home Security

Biometric technology continues to expand into consumer smart home devices, with SwitchBot becoming the latest manufacturer to incorporate facial recognition into its product line. The company’s newly launched Lock Ultra Vision Combo features 3D facial recognition as a primary authentication method, reinforcing a growing trend toward more advanced identity-based access control in residential settings.

Biometrics Gain Ground in Smart Home Security

The Lock Ultra Vision Combo combines SwitchBot’s existing smart lock hardware with a facial recognition keypad and a Matter-compatible hub for broader smart home integration. The system uses 3D mapping technology that captures over 30,000 infrared data points, enabling authentication in less than a second. According to the company, its false recognition rate is below 0.0001 percent, and biometric data is stored locally with AES-128 encryption, aligning with security standards used by enterprise-grade access control providers.

Biometric access control has become more common in consumer devices in recent years, with manufacturers adopting facial, fingerprint, and iris recognition to complement or replace traditional unlocking methods. SwitchBot’s inclusion of facial recognition follows other recent announcements such as Leaf’s iris-enabled cards and builds on a wider shift toward more secure, frictionless user authentication across sectors.

Versatility, Reliability, and Integration

In addition to facial recognition, the Lock Ultra system supports 18 unlocking methods, including fingerprint scanning, NFC cards, app-based control, voice activation, and physical keys. It is designed as a retrofit solution compatible with the vast majority of existing locks, requiring no permanent installation or drilling. Early reviewers have noted that the system includes auto-calibration features to improve reliability, addressing issues seen in previous smart lock designs.

The device’s performance and reliability are backed by a triple-layered battery system: a rechargeable lithium-ion main battery with up to nine months of life, a backup CR123A cell, and an emergency capacitor that can trigger a final unlock if the primary batteries are depleted. The lock also includes six-layer security protections such as tamper detection and real-time door status updates.

While real-world use of facial recognition in consumer devices can be affected by factors like lighting and user angle, the system incorporates an 850nm infrared light to support low-light performance. Calibration options allow for either automatic or manual activation, enabling users to conserve battery life or tailor recognition settings to their environment.

The full system includes three components: the Lock Ultra smart lock mechanism, the Keypad Vision with facial recognition, and the Hub Mini, which supports Matter integration and compatibility with Apple Home and other platforms. Additional automation features are accessible through SwitchBot’s Hub 3 ecosystem.

SwitchBot is currently offering the Lock Ultra Vision Combo at a promotional price of $162.50, with regular pricing set at $249.99. The Lock Ultra and Keypad Vision can also be purchased separately. As of May 2025, the Keypad Vision is still undergoing verification for sale in the US, so regional availability may vary.
