American Airlines Launches Touchless ID Security at Four Major US Airports

May 30, 2025

American Airlines has launched its TSA PreCheck Touchless ID program at four major U.S. airports, bringing facial recognition-based identity verification to security checkpoints for eligible travelers. The system eliminates the need for physical IDs or boarding passes, reflecting a growing shift toward biometric authentication in the aviation industry.

Facial Recognition at the TSA Checkpoint

The new program, which went live on May 29, 2025, is currently active at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). It enables travelers to verify their identity by simply standing in front of a camera. A live image is captured and matched to government-held photos, such as those from passport or Global Entry records, allowing travelers to proceed through TSA PreCheck lanes without presenting any documents.

Enrollment in the program is voluntary and limited to American Airlines AAdvantage members aged 18 or older. Participants must also hold a valid passport and an active TSA PreCheck membership with a Known Traveler Number (KTN). Travelers can opt in via the airline’s website or mobile app. Enrollment remains valid for one year, and users may opt out at any time, reverting to traditional ID checks.

Security Standards and Operational Efficiency

The Touchless ID system complies with the TSA’s broader digital transformation goals and operates within the framework of the Aviation Security Enterprise Architecture (ASEA). Privacy protections are governed by the Privacy Act of 1974 and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policies. Biometric data collected is not used for commercial purposes and is stored and processed strictly for security screening.

According to industry estimates, the use of facial recognition at security checkpoints can reduce average verification time from 20–25 seconds to 7–10 seconds, significantly improving checkpoint throughput. However, at this stage, the system is only available to travelers booked individually; group reservations are not yet supported.

This initiative builds on earlier biometric efforts by American Airlines, including a 2022 Mobile ID pilot program that tested selfie-based verification for domestic travel. It also aligns with a wider trend in U.S. aviation, as noted in a recent SITA report identifying North American carriers as global leaders in deploying digital identity tools at airports.

Part of a Broader Biometric Expansion

The launch at Salt Lake City International Airport coincides with Delta’s recent expansion of its own biometric screening infrastructure at the same airport, underscoring a wider industry embrace of contactless travel. The TSA has been piloting and deploying biometric systems since 2021, with Delta and United pioneering earlier implementations at Atlanta, Detroit, and other major hubs.

American Airlines plans to expand the Touchless ID program to additional airports in the coming months, with targeted rollouts at major hubs including Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), and Miami International (MIA). This continued rollout is expected to help prepare the U.S. air travel system for the increased identity verification demands of the upcoming REAL ID enforcement deadline.
