Lytx Finalizes $4.25M BIPA Settlement With Truck Drivers Over Biometric Data
Lytx has agreed to a $4.25 million settlement in a class action lawsuit over alleged BIPA violations involving driver-facing cameras. Illinois-based drivers will receive $631 each, while out-of-state drivers will receive $845, with the fund split evenly between both groups. The case covers biometric data collected from October 2016 to January 2025. The settlement includes $10,000 service awards for named plaintiffs and $1.42 million in legal fees. Lytx has since introduced geofencing to disable cameras in Illinois, where biometric laws are among the strictest in the U.S.
BIO-key to Host Q2 2025 Earnings Call August 13 Amid Strategic Global Growth
BIO-key will hold its Q2 2025 earnings call on August 13 at 10:00 AM ET, with financial results released earlier that morning. The call will highlight progress in Europe and Africa, including a Runlevel partnership in Mozambique and collaborations with Arrow ECS in Spain and Portugal. It follows BIO-key’s recent membership in the ISMS Forum and comes shortly after NIST’s SP 800-63 Rev. 4 guidelines update, which introduces stricter biometric authentication standards.
Ituran Launches Smartphone-Based Biometric Security System for Vehicles
Ituran has introduced Ituran KEY, a smartphone-based biometric security system that replaces key fobs and immobilizer codes with facial and fingerprint recognition. Once authenticated via smartphone, drivers can start their vehicles. The system merges biometric verification with existing vehicle security protocols and targets both consumers and fleet operators. Ituran has not yet announced pricing or compatibility details. The launch comes amid broader industry interest in biometric vehicle access systems from companies like Ford and Stellantis.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers Launch Facial Recognition Express Entry at Raymond James Stadium
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have introduced an optional facial recognition entry system called Express Entry for all events at Raymond James Stadium. Fans aged 18+ can register by uploading a selfie through their Ticketmaster account. On game day, registered users can enter through dedicated lanes without scanning a ticket. The system supports group entry and complements traditional access options. It follows similar rollouts by the Milwaukee Brewers and K-pop promoter HYBE, amid increasing adoption of biometric venue access solutions.
North Carolina to Launch Secure Mobile Driver’s License Program by Mid-2025
North Carolina will launch a mobile ID system by mid-2025, allowing residents to store digital versions of their driver’s licenses on smartphones. The app will use biometric and document verification to onboard users and will support selective information sharing for tasks like age verification. Physical IDs will remain mandatory until digital IDs gain broader acceptance. The move follows successful programs in states like Louisiana and reflects growing support for digital credentials, including recent legal approval for student voter ID use at UNC-Chapel Hill.
YouTube to Launch AI-Powered Age Verification Across U.S. Starting August 13
Starting August 13, YouTube will use machine learning to estimate user ages based on behavioral signals like search history and viewing habits. The system will automatically apply teen protections—such as disabling personalized ads and enabling screen time limits—without relying on self-reported age. Adults misclassified as teens can verify their identity using a credit card, government ID, or selfie. The update reflects industry trends toward behavioral and biometric-based age verification and follows recent NIST guidelines on digital identity standards.
Odisha Mandates Biometric Attendance at All Revenue Offices Statewide
Odisha has mandated biometric attendance systems in all district, sub-divisional, and tehsil revenue offices. The Revenue and Disaster Management Department issued the directive to improve punctuality and administrative efficiency. The rollout follows similar moves in Gurugram and aligns with India’s broader public-sector digitization. District Collectors will oversee compliance, and the system will track employee entry and exit times. The initiative aims to strengthen oversight of public services such as land records and certifications.
HID Expands FIDO Portfolio With New Hardware and Enterprise Passkey Management Platform
HID has launched an Enterprise Passkey Management (EPM) platform and new FIDO hardware authenticators to help organizations scale passwordless security. EPM enables centralized lifecycle management of FIDO credentials and integrates with Microsoft Entra ID. The hardware lineup includes updated Crescendo Keys, Crescendo Cards, and the OMNIKEY 5022 reader, plus Seos and MIFARE DESFire EV3 smart cards that combine physical access with FIDO login. TX Systems praised the ease of deployment, and the expansion addresses cost and complexity concerns identified in FIDO Alliance research.
Fime Partners With CAICT to Enhance NFC Testing Infrastructure in China
Fime has partnered with the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) to upgrade NFC testing capabilities using the CTS III Contactless Test Station emulator. The platform increases testing speed and supports both analogue and digital NFC testing. Distribution partner Paralink will help local manufacturers adopt the system for in-house validation. The move aligns with China’s leadership in NFC innovation, including contributions to digital car key standards, and reflects broader efforts to accelerate contactless device certification.
