Welcome to ID Tech’s digest of identity industry news. Here’s what you need to know about the world of digital identity and biometrics today:

Ontario Launches First Major Review of AI in Criminal Justice System
The Law Commission of Ontario has launched Canada’s first major public consultation on the use of AI in the criminal justice system, examining its application across policing, prosecution, sentencing, and post-conviction oversight. The initiative seeks to address the regulatory vacuum surrounding AI tools—such as facial recognition and predictive policing—and their risks to due process, transparency, and marginalized communities. Key concerns include algorithmic bias, lack of explainability, and absence of oversight. The LCO aims to develop a Trustworthy AI Framework and is soliciting input from legal, tech, and civil society stakeholders.
Europol Warns AI-Generated Fakes Can Bypass Phone Biometric Security
Europol has issued a warning about increasing vulnerabilities in smartphone biometric systems due to AI-powered threats, including artificial fingerprints, deepfakes, and voice cloning. Attackers are now using 3D-printed fingerprints, manipulated facial images, and synthetic voices to bypass authentication. The report highlights the long-term risk of biometric data breaches, urging adoption of multi-factor authentication, stronger liveness detection, and resilient system design. Europol also calls for standardized biometric attack reporting, alignment with GDPR, and greater collaboration between law enforcement, researchers, and tech developers to strengthen biometric security across Europe.
ARGOS AI Identity System to Combat Ticket Fraud on South Korea’s Melon Platform
ARGOS Identity has partnered with Kakao Entertainment to deploy an AI-powered identity verification system on Melon Ticket, aiming to combat ticket scalping and unauthorized resale. The system uses facial recognition, document authentication, passive liveness detection, and proxy detection to enforce a one-account-per-person policy and comply with South Korea’s updated anti-scalping laws. It supports both domestic and international users through CI and DI-based verification. Compliant with ISO27001 and KYC/AML standards, the platform marks one of the most comprehensive uses of biometric ID verification in live event ticketing.
Germany Launches Digital ID Cards for Smartphone Storage Nationwide
Germany has entered the next phase of its national digital ID rollout, enabling citizens to store electronic versions of ID and residence cards on smartphones. Aligned with the EU Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI) framework under eIDAS, the system will support secure online and offline verification for services such as banking, healthcare, and public administration. Backed by biometric authentication, PKI, and protocols used in the existing eID infrastructure, the rollout is being coordinated through pilot prototypes led by SPRIND and involving partners like Google and Samsung. A new ministry will oversee ongoing digital modernization efforts.
UK Digital ID Firms Push for Portability Rules in Data Bill to Prevent Gov Monopoly
UK digital identity firms are calling on lawmakers to amend the Data (Use and Access) Bill to include legal provisions for interoperability and portability, warning that without these, the government’s One Login and Gov.uk Wallet systems could crowd out private sector innovation. In an open letter, stakeholders urged limits on the Gov.uk Wallet’s use to government-only services and asked for certified digital ID software to be recognized for authentication across public services. The appeal follows reports of security flaws in One Login and fears that government-led solutions could undermine a £2 billion sector employing 11,000 people.
Neurotechnology Enhances MegaMatcher Platform with New Forensic Tools for Law Enforcement
Neurotechnology has released version 2025.1 of its MegaMatcher Criminal Investigation platform, adding automatic enhancement filters for latent prints, support for cross-searching unsolved cases, and an annotation feature for examiner collaboration. The update improves latent print recognition using a top-ranked algorithm from the NIST ELFT evaluation, enabling better identification from poor-quality or partial prints. It integrates with MegaMatcher ABIS and is part of Neurotechnology’s broader suite of law enforcement tools, including SentiVeillance. The company’s biometric systems are deployed globally, including in national ID and election programs across several countries.
Identity Security Startup AuthMind Raises $19.3M to Expand AI Protection Platform
AuthMind has secured $19.3 million in seed funding to expand its identity threat detection platform, which monitors human and non-human identities across hybrid and cloud environments. The platform uses patented continuous access flow mapping to uncover blind spots like shadow assets and MFA gaps, and supports rapid enterprise deployment. The funding will support team growth and product integration efforts. AuthMind, headquartered in Maryland with engineering in India, has clients among Fortune 100 firms and was recently recognized at the 2025 Cybersecurity Excellence Awards.
Malaysia’s Kelantan State Plans Biometric CCTV Network Along Thai Border
The Kelantan state government has submitted a proposal to Malaysia’s Ministry of Home Affairs to deploy biometric CCTV systems and surveillance drones along the Kelantan-Thailand border. Aimed at addressing rising cross-border crime, especially drug trafficking, the plan targets high-risk areas like Sungai Golok and the ICQS Complex in Rantau Panjang. The system would support real-time facial recognition and biometric identification. Additional elements include biometric scanners, youth-focused drug awareness campaigns, and cross-agency coordination. The initiative aligns with national border modernization plans, including the ABIS and NBCS programs, and awaits federal approval and funding.
iVALT Launches Mobile-Based DocuID Platform for Document Security Control
iVALT has introduced DocuID, a mobile-based service for real-time document access control using five-factor authentication. The platform lets users manage file permissions dynamically through biometric ID, device registration, GPS geofencing, time-based rules, and contextual data. Built on iVALT’s Zero Trust identity framework, DocuID enables secure document sharing without relying on traditional cloud protections. The solution integrates with platforms like P3iD’s ScanBot and supports fast enterprise deployment, targeting industries such as healthcare, finance, and logistics.
