Chung-Ang University Tests UNIONCOMMUNITY’s Biometric Thermal Scanner

South Korea’s Chung-Ang University will be carrying out the first test-run of UNIONCOMMUNITY’s new UBio-X Pro2 access control solution. The standalone device was unveiled earlier this month, and combines a thermal scanner with the company’s facial recognition system in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.

The UBio-X Pro2 will specifically be installed at Chung-Ang’s Da Vinci SW Education Center, where it will be used to identify the faces of students entering the facility. Those students will have booked their appointments in advance, and anyone with an elevated temperature can be denied entry to prevent them from exposing other people to a possible COVID-19 infection.

The deployment will be carried out on June 20, and is part of TOPIT (Test Of Practice in IT) competency evaluation. Yoon Kyung-Hyun, the Director of the SW Educational Department, explained that two students in Chung-Ang’s software department are working with the UNIONCOMMUNITY team as part of a collaboration between the industry and academia.

The UBio-X system is able to carry out facial recognition scans from multiple angles at a distance of two meters. UNIONCOMMUNITY has also released an iris scanner with a 50cm range to help meet the demand for contactless authentication tech.
