UNIONCOMMUNITY has unveiled a new iris recognition system to help meet the growing demand for contactless authentication options. The UBio-X Iris has an auto-tilting feature that can detect and identify irises at a distance of 50 cm, and consequently requires far less proximity than a more conventional iris scanner that is mounted in a fixed location.
The multimodal UBio-X Iris supports face and fingerprint recognition in addition to iris recognition, and can scan up to 20,000 irises per second. UNIONCOMMUNITY believes that the solution will be particularly popular in the Middle East, where hijabs limit the utility of facial recognition alone. As it stands, the company is pitching the platform as a potential security solution in high traffic venues like airports and medical facilities.
“We have established an integrated biometric recognition system that encompasses iris, face, and fingerprints,” said UNIONCOMMUNITY CEO Shin Yo-sik. “As of this year, we will expand our demand for non-contact products around the world and plan to increase sales by strengthening non-face biometric products and security solutions.”
While the new iris tech was supposed to debut in the second half of 2020, UNIONCOMMUNITY accelerated its production timeline in response to COVID-19. The pandemic has generated more interest facial recognition, iris recognition, and other contactless modalities that are more sanitary than contact-based alternatives.
