“Yoti’s system provides a much higher level of assurance than legacy online age verification methods like credit card ownership and self-reported check boxes, and creates an auditable trail of age verification events.”
Yoti will be helping Australian liquor retailers verify the ages of people purchasing alcohol online. To that end, the company has partnered with eftpos and Retail Drinks Australia to give consumers a discreet way to prove their age through eftpos’ new connectID platform.
In that regard, connectID was essentially developed as a digital middleman for the Australian market. The platform gathers information from digital identity providers like Yoti, and then passes that information on to merchants and other operators that need to be able to confirm certain details in the course of doing business. connectID does not store any of the data that gets relayed through its system, but does ensure that that data comes from a trusted source.
Yoti, meanwhile, is a digital identity specialist that provides retailers with reliable age verification services. The company’s age estimation technology is accurate to within 1.5 years for those between the ages of 13 and 24, and can confidently determine when someone is above that threshold and is therefore legally old enough to purchase alcohol. The process does not require any advance registration, and can be completed with a standard camera device. The captured image is deleted as soon as the age verification process is complete.
Alternately, customers can prove their age directly through the Yoti app. The app is encrypted and gives people full control of the information in their account, so users can demonstrate that they are over a certain age without disclosing any other personal details.
The stakeholders are hoping that Yoti and connectID will help retailers comply with stricter alcohol regulations, especially in the wake of a New South Wales law that will require age verification for online alcohol delivery orders as of July of 2022. Yoti’s system provides a much higher level of assurance than legacy online age verification methods like credit card ownership and self-reported check boxes, and creates an auditable trail of age verification events.
“We are excited to devise a turnkey solution for secure age verification for online alcohol purchases,” said Yoti Australian Regional Director Darren Pollard. “It works at both the online point of sale and at delivery to provide shoppers a secure, safe and quick experience and online retailers a secure, compliant solution.”
Under the new system, consumers can enjoy same-day delivery for retail alcohol orders made online. MyIntegrator and Beer Cartel helped eftpos integrate Yoti’s age tech into the connectID demo site. That tech has previously been used to facilitate the online sale of Jägermeister, and to help control access to age-restricted content in Germany and the UK.
