VAXSYS Technologies has released a pair of mobile apps that give people an easy way to share and confirm COVID-19 credentials. The VAXSYS Universal Enroller is a consumer-facing app that creates and stores a vaccination record in a personal account, while the Universal Screener is a more commercial app that lets venues scan an identity document to confirm that credential. Both apps are only available through the Google Play Store for Android devices.
The Universal Enroller will create an individual account when someone shows up to receive a vaccine. The account will then record the time and date of the vaccination, as well as personal information such as name and date of birth. After that, the individual will be able to present an identity document like a driver’s license when they try to enter a gym, a restaurant, or a similar facility. The venue operators can use the Universal Screener to scan that document, and the app will cross-reference the information on the ID with the personal information stored in the Enroller to confirm that person’s vaccination status.
The Universal Screener is built with document recognition technology from IDScan.net. The solution is anonymous insofar as the Screener will only display green or red to indicate whether or not the person has been vaccinated, though the person performing the scan would still presumably be able to view the information on the ID itself. In that regard, the VAXSYS offering is less anonymous than solutions that link test results to a biometric template to give users a way to prove their identity without disclosing any other personal information.
The information in the Enroller is stored in an encrypted database, and will automatically be updated if and when an individual receives their second shot. It will also help ensure that the same person received both treatments.
“VAXSYS set out to develop a low cost, paperless system for enrolling, recording, and reporting at the vaccination sites; and then, through mobile, contactless screening, allow businesses and other entities to re-open, faster and more safely,” said VAXSYS CEO Moshe Meppen. “This has been done for every level of security from a coffee shop to the Pentagon.”
The VAXSYS offering is one of several immunity credentials that has hit the market in the past few months. IDScan added facial recognition to its platform back in 2018.
