TECH5 is bringing its biometric identity verification technology directly to the physical IDs that are so often used in remote verification processes. The company has announced a new solution, “T5-FaceLink”, that uses a biometric code to confirm that a given document hasn’t had its photo swapped by a fraudster.
The solution is designed to scan the photo on a piece of ID and generate a code based on its face biometrics. The code is then printed on the document itself, alongside the photo. From there, subsequent scans of the photo can see if the biometrics depicted match the code from the original photo. If they don’t, that means the photo isn’t the same as the one that was originally printed on the identity document.
What’s more, the T5-FaceLink code can also contain an ID’s digital signature, adding further security to the ID.
TECH5 says its new solution was inspired by technologies in its T5-Digital ID solution, which enables the creation and storage of digital IDs on mobile devices. Compatible with the MOSIP open-source platform for national digital ID programs, T5-Digital ID recently served as the foundation for a pioneering student ID system in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with TECH5 and its domestic partner Sycamore having announced this year a cross-country expansion of its availability after an initial pilot in Kinshasa.
With the new T5-FaceLink solution, TECH5’s executives are looking to add more firepower to the fight against identity fraud at the level of forgery.
“Fraudulent documents with swapped photos pose significant risks as they facilitate various types of illegal activities, including identity theft, financial fraud, immigration fraud, and other forms of deception,” explained TECH5 co-founder, CTO, and Chairman Rahul Parthe.
The company says that T5-FaceLink is already being trialled in several national ID projects underway in the Middle East, and that the solution is now available to all of its certified partners globally.
