TECH5, DRC Partner to Offer Digital Student ID Across Congo

May 15, 2023

“This project demonstrates how T5-Digital ID can be used to make student IDs multi-functional, secure, and biometrically verifiable with no need for smart cards or purpose-built devices for verification, and no need for an internet connection to a central database.” -Ameya Bhagwat, SVP of Sales and Business Development, TECH5

TECH5, DRC Partner to Offer Digital Student ID Across Congo

After a successful initial deployment, TECH5 and its partner Sycamore are preparing to launch their digital student ID solution across the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The companies’ solution uses TECH5’s T5-Cryptograph technology to print a code containing a given student’s encrypted face biometrics data. It is powered by T5-OmniMatch DIT (Digital Identity Toolkit), TECH5’s biometric capture solution.

The smart card enables students to access university facilities and can be used as a boarding pass on student buses. It was initially launched in Kinshasa toward the end of last year, and the companies are now comfortable calling it a success and preparing for a wider rollout.

“This project demonstrates how T5-Digital ID can be used to make student IDs multi-functional, secure, and biometrically verifiable with no need for smart cards or purpose-built devices for verification, and no need for an internet connection to a central database,” explained TECH5’s SVP of Sales and Business Development, Ameya Bhagwat. “We are proud to contribute with our technologies to develop a solution that allows students of the DRC to be equipped with next-generation IDs in a cost-efficient and expeditious manner.”

Sycamore Deputy CEO Michel Gamero, meanwhile, expressed ambitions to expand the firms’ collaborative efforts beyond student ID, suggesting that future projects will extend “digital ID technologies across various verticals in both government and enterprise sectors, to provide the best biometric solutions available on the market.”

The news offers the latest indication of TECH5’s interest in exploring new and innovative areas of digital ID in which to apply its biometric technologies. Last month, the company announced that it had joined the Secure Identity Alliance and its OSIA Initiative, which is aimed at developing an open standard for Application Programming Interfaces to support interoperability between different identity management solutions and technologies.

Its T5-Cryptograph solution is also being used in a multi-party collaboration with ZKTeco, PDQ Manufacturing, and PassiveBolt that is aimed at establishing a decentralized biometric identity solution for access control applications.
