Tactilis Partnership to See NEXT Sensors Used in 2019 Biometric Card Pilot Projects

NEXT Biometrics‘ fingerprint sensor technology for smart cards will be used in three major pilot projects in Asia, the company has announced.

It’s thanks to NEXT Biometrics’ partnership with Tactilis, the Singapore-based firm that integrated NEXT Biometrics’ large-area fingerprint sensor technology into a flexible biometric card last autumn. Tactilis has signed a Letter of Intent with an undisclosed organization to trial the technology across three different applications, “all of which have potential global impact,” NEXT asserted in a statement.

It appears that both NEXT Biometrics and Tactilis are required to be tight-lipped about the project, with neither company revealing their partner’s identity, but there are signs that it may be a large government body. In its statement, NEXT Biometrics explained that “[t]he projects require smart card systems offering government grade biometric performance, multifunction capabilities and advanced management of user data and credentials.” The organization later added that the pilot projects “require performance similar to the mandatory requirements of the Aadhaar program in India,” a hugely ambitious national ID program based on biometric identification of citizens.

Elaborating further, NEXT Biometrics CEO Ritu Favre said, “These pilots represent new smart card applications for which our large sensors offer a unique combination of high-security and ease-of-use.”

The pilot projects are to get underway starting in the first quarter of next year, and NEXT says it expects to provide further details before the end of this year.
