Swedish Digital Mailbox Kivra Acquires ID Firm Truid Ahead of EU Wallet Launch

Kivra, Sweden’s leading digital mailbox provider, has acquired digital identity specialist Truid in a strategic move that positions the company for the European Union’s upcoming digital identity wallet initiative. The acquisition brings Truid’s product development team and technology capabilities under Kivra’s umbrella, expanding its secure information sharing and identity management services.

The merger comes at a crucial time as the EU advances its digital identity wallet program, which recently began large-scale pilot testing. Kivra, which currently serves over 6.5 million users across Sweden and Finland, aims to leverage Truid’s expertise to enhance its role in the emerging digital identity ecosystem.

“We already see a growing need for people to be able to share their information on their own terms,” said Henrik Lönnevi, CEO of Kivra. “Kivra and the identity wallet belong together, and with Truid’s expertise, we can accelerate Kivra’s development into a platform where information can be shared securely.”

The acquisition is particularly timely for Kivra’s Finnish operations, where digital identity initiatives are rapidly advancing. New legislation taking effect next year will require Finnish authorities to transition from paper to digital communications, making Kivra’s expanded capabilities increasingly relevant.

Ilari Abdeen, CEO of Kivra Finland, emphasized the strategic importance of the merger, stating, “The development of the identity wallet is an EU-wide project and also topical in Finland in the coming years.”

The EU’s digital identity wallet initiative aims to give citizens greater control over their personal data, enabling secure storage and sharing of digital documents such as driver’s licenses, diplomas, and health information. In Sweden, the Agency for Digital Government (Digg) is overseeing the development of the country’s identity wallet and establishing regulations for private providers.
