Suprema Pushes Contactless Access With BioStation 3 Reveal

Suprema has unveiled the next iteration of its BioStation access control solution. BioStation 3 debuted at last week’s Intersec 2022 show in Dubai, and was built to help meet the growing demand for contactless access control technology.

In that regard, BioStation 3 improves on its predecessor with the addition of facial recognition. The BioStation 2 (which was released in 2015) identified people with fingerprints rather than faces, a technology that is secure but still forces employees to place their fingers on a shared device. That makes the BioStation 3 better-suited to a post-COVID-19 environment in which people are worried about sanitation and safe working conditions.

The facial recognition technology in the new BioStation terminal can identify people who are wearing masks, regardless of the shape and color of that facial covering. Suprema also promises that the platform will authenticate users quickly, accurately, and with a minimal false acceptance rate. In addition to facial recognition, the BioStation 3 offers support for QR codes, barcodes, and mobile access cards that can be stored on a user’s smartphone.

According to Suprema, the latter feature makes the BioStation 3 more eco-friendly than its predecessors. The company noted that discarded (and decomposing) RFID cards were responsible for 1.8 million metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2021. The BioStation 3 eliminates the need for plastic cards, using NFC and Bluetooth technology to replace them with digital credentials. That reduces plastic waste and issuing costs, while simultaneously getting rid of the security threat associated with cards that have been lost or stolen.

“BioStation 3 is expected to offer an enhanced experience for operators, installers and end-users,” said Suprema CEO Hanchul Kim. “Through this event in Dubai, Suprema will further drive our leading position in the global security market and demonstrate our technical superiority and vision for future business.”

Omdia recently named Suprema as the world’s top supplier of biometric access control readers outside of China. Suprema previously introduced its FaceStation F2 terminal with face and fingerprint recognition capabilities back in 2020.
