Speech Technology Center Brings Biometric Access Control to Russian University

The Speech Technology Center has provided a face-based access control system for the Siberian Federal University (SibFU) in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Despite its name, the Speech Technology Center is a developer of both face and voice recognition technology and is hoping to scale its offerings to as many as 50 universities in the future.

The contactless access control system was installed at SibFU’s School of Economics and Commerce building as part of a large-scale campus project. Built with Smart Tracker.FRS technology, the solution scans people’s faces as they approach the turnstile, and matches the extracted template against a database of those with the proper clearance.

The solution reflects the growing interest in contactless biometrics, and should help improve sanitary outcomes during the pandemic. The Speech Technology Center also indicated that the technology could be used for other applications. For example, facial recognition could be used to verify the identities of students sitting down for remote exams.

“Given the vast array of property we own, the campus project and its further scaling are an extremely relevant task,” said SibFU Rector Maksim Rumyantsev. “Currently, we have completed the installation of equipment at one of our schools and have started building the database. We expect testing to be complete within a year.”

“All processes now take milliseconds and have no adverse impact on the throughput of the turnstile. This allows for convenient, fast and — crucially — contactless entry,” added Speech Technology Center CEO Dmitriy Dyrmovskiy. “The deployment of our face recognition system could be the starting point for more campus projects in the Siberian region and throughout Russia.”

The Technology Center has already provided face-based access control for 14 sports venues and more than 20 transportation facilities. It has also made its speech recognition technology available to small and medium-sized businesses through the cloud.
