The sequel to Vivo’s pioneering X20 Plus UD smartphone is coming to India, with the country’s major retailer Flipkart announcing that it will be exclusive retailer of the Vivo X21.
The device maintains the key feature of its predecessor – an in-display fingerprint sensor. Developed by Synaptics, the Clear ID biometric technology allows a fingerprint to be scanned through the display of the smartphone, rather than through a dedicated button on the bottom bezel or some other awkward part of the device. That allowed Vivo to maintain a certain ease of use with respect to biometric user authentication even as it embraced a trendy full-size screen for its latest flagship devices.
The Vivo X21 is also one of the few smartphones to feature a beta version of Android P, the next major version of Google’s popular operating system. Android P has a more robust biometric authentication API designed to support multiple modalities, though in the case of the Vivo X21 the focus in on traditional fingerprint scanning, with an in-display twist.
The device launched in China in March, only a couple of months after the launch of the Vivo X20 Plus UD, and it looks like India is poised to become the third market in which the device is available after it reached Singapore earlier this month. Flipkart has set a launch date of May 29th, but hasn’t yet unveiled the device’s pricing.
