Smart Engines Can Now Recognize EU’s New Biometric IDs

Smart Engines has updated its document recognition platform to support the new biometric ID cards that are being rolled out in the European Union. The new electronic IDs are printed with a QR code, and will store biometric data on a chip embedded in the card.

The Smart ID Engine, meanwhile, is a document scanning solution that allows organizations to verify the authenticity of different documents. The update will make the platform compatible with 61 new document subtypes, bringing the total number of recognized documents to 1,810, and the total number of unique supported document templates to 2,441.

European Union member states are releasing biometric IDs to comply with a new policy that went into effect in August. The law was originally passed in 2019, and is intended to make it more difficult for criminals to forge identity documents. In doing so, EU lawmakers are hoping to make it safer for people to do business and travel throughout the region.

In the meantime, Smart Engines’ enhanced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology will let the Smart ID Engine scan those cards more quickly. The solution does not transfer any data to a third party for processing, and is therefore compliant with the latest GDPR data processing requirements. It also means that businesses can use it to fulfill their Know Your Customer and Anti-Money Laundering obligations. On that front, the platform has already been integrated into iDenfy’s onboarding solution, which uses facial recognition to match a selfie to the image pulled from an identity document.

Smart ID Engine can run on a desktop or a mobile device. It can recognize IDs, visas, and residency permits from more than a dozen EU member states, including France, Spain, Austria, and Estonia. Smart Engines itself is active outside of Europe, and is working with NEC de Colombia to develop an onboarding solution for the Peruvian market.
