SLC Digital, a provider of SIM-anchored hardware-rooted identity authentication, and Ideco Biometrics, a South Africa-based biometric identity technology firm, have formed a strategic partnership to deliver a unified identity framework for enterprise and government use cases in the South African market.
The partnership combines SLC Digital’s hardware-bound cryptographic authentication platform with Ideco’s multimodal biometric capabilities, encompassing fingerprint recognition, facial recognition, and combined multimodal authentication. Ideco will lead commercial deployment efforts in South Africa. Target sectors include financial services, telecommunications, and digital platforms, where account takeover, SIM swap attacks, and AI-driven impersonation are cited as primary threat drivers. FBI data cited in the announcement shows account takeover losses exceeded $262 million in 2025. SIM swap fraud has climbed rapidly in South Africa over the past two years, with attackers exploiting the gap between mobile operator SIM re-issuance and downstream service provider re-authentication. Anchoring the identity claim in hardware, rather than in a reissued credential, is positioned by SLC and Ideco as the control point that closes that gap at the SIM layer rather than at each downstream relying party.
SIM swap fraud is a particularly acute pain point in South African banking, and the hardware-anchored biometric combination is designed to address it directly. By binding authentication cryptographically to a device’s SIM layer, the system prevents an attacker who has swapped a victim’s phone number from using that number to bypass identity checks. SLC Digital CEO Travis McGregor said the deal represents “a major step forward in expanding secure, hardware-rooted identity into new markets.” Ideco Biometrics CEO Marius Coetzee said combining biometrics with hardware-backed authentication enables the companies “to deliver secure, scalable solutions.”
The Ideco deal is the third in SLC Digital’s partnership series. SLC Digital’s IDEMIA partnership in October 2025 established the hardware-rooted SIM identity architecture that is now being extended to new geographies, and SLC Digital’s Tracer Labs alliance from February 2026 continued the geographic and ecosystem expansion. The South Africa deployment enters a market energized by South Africa’s multi-agency digital ID platform, a government initiative that targeted 2.5 million digital IDs by end-2025.
