SITA has won a contract to expand its services at Kotoka International Airport in Ghana. The company’s new contract with Ghana Airports Company Limited will see SITA managing all airport passenger processing and baggage management in Terminal 3 over the next five years.
SITA already began deploying its systems to the airport a year ago, with solutions including self-serve kiosks for check-in and baggage management technology. Going forward, the airport will also benefit from SITA’s Airport Management Solution for operations.
SITA operates in 45 of Africa’s 54 countries, and its considerable presence and experience on the continent appears to have been a factor in establishing the contract. “Having implemented many of the solutions in use at Terminal 3, together with their experience across numerous African airports, SITA were best placed to support the management of these vital systems that underpin the smooth operation of Kotoka International Airport,” explained Ghana Airports Company Managing Director Yaw Kwakwa in a statement announcing the deal.
The sophisticated biometric technology involved in SITA’s solutions may also have played an important part. The company offers biometric eGates that can be used to reduce wait times and enhance security, and this technology helped to deliver a record $1.7 billion in revenues last year.
This reflects a larger trend as a growing number of airport and border security authorities look to biometric solutions. According to recent analysis from Acuity Market Research, there are now almost 3500 Automated Border Control eGates in operation across 80 countries. Biometric passenger identification technology is in use across a large swath of these eGates.
