SITA is celebrating its 70th birthday with the strongest year in company history. The air travel specialist brought in a record $1.7 billion in revenue in 2018, a figure that speaks to the company’s successful efforts to pivot its business in response to changes in the airline industry.
“For the first time in our 70-year history, our application business now represents more than 50 percent of our revenues,” said SITA CEO Barbara Dalibard. “While connectivity remains a vital part of our business, application growth is a fundamental element of our long-term strategy.”
In that regard, SITA has been quick to embrace new technologies like biometrics that have transformed the travel experience for passengers. SITA’s award-winning identity verification technology has already been deployed in Athens, Orlando, and other airports around the world. The biometric eGates have drastically reduced wait times at security checkpoints and will allow airlines to handle a growing number of passengers safely and more efficiently.
“Over the next 20 years, passenger traffic is forecasted to double, while airport capacity will only grow by 5 percent. This requires a new approach to air travel,” added Dalibard. “We must continue to innovate to shape the future of air travel.”
Previous SITA research has found that the majority of airports are planning to integrate biometric tech, and that passengers have been happy with the results so far. That suggests that the trend is likely to continue, and that biometric technology will be an integral part of SITA’s plans moving forward.
