Sightcorp has added mask detection capabilities to its DeepSight crowd analysis platform. DeepSight is designed primarily for the retail industry, providing owners with more accurate information about their customers while allowing them to target specific audiences with specific messages using digital signage spread throughout the store.
The new mask detection feature has been integrated into that existing system. The technology can determine whether or not someone is wearing a mask, and then use digital screens to display reminders for anyone who is not complying with the latest health and safety guidelines.
“I am happy that our team was able to act quickly in the development of our mask detection software,” said Sightcorp CEO Joyce Caradonna. “With this addition to our audience analytics product, we are glad to support businesses in creating a safer environment in an efficient and cost-effective way.”
Since masks obscure facial features, Sightcorp has retrained DeepSight to ensure that it can still capture the consumer data (such as age and gender) that it uses for audience analytics. The solution can also be leveraged for access control at gates, turnstiles and other points of entry. In that scenario, DeepSight can be configured to deny access to anyone who is not wearing a mask and could potentially expose other people to a disease like COVID-19.
DeepSight is able to verify people’s identities with facial recognition, and can be deployed alongside temperature detection technology that can spot someone with a fever. It can also be used to count the number of people in a given area, which in turn allows stores to enforce occupancy limitations and social distancing requirements.
The update makes Sightcorp the latest facial recognition provider to introduce mask detection in response to the coronavirus. Companies like CyberLink and NEC have already unveiled similar solutions, while ZKTeco has paired mask detection with thermal screening.
