SecureAuth has acquired SessionGuardian, enhancing its identity and access management (IAM/CIAM) capabilities with new continuous biometric verification technology. The acquisition incorporates SessionGuardian’s Biometric Continuous Identity Assurance (BCIA) functionality into SecureAuth’s existing portfolio, marking the company’s second major biometrics acquisition following its 2021 purchase of behavioral biometrics firm Acceptto.
The BCIA technology continuously verifies a user’s identity throughout active sessions, automatically locking access if suspicious activity is detected. This addresses security gaps that can occur after initial authentication in remote and hybrid work environments. The technology builds upon SecureAuth’s existing authentication solutions, including their recently patented passwordless authentication methods.
SecureAuth CEO Joseph Dhanapal explains, “Not having biometric continuous identity assurance after the initial login authentication creates a critical vulnerability. The rest of the session remains unprotected, leaving organizations exposed to unauthorized access and malicious actions.”
The acquisition specifically targets sectors with heightened security requirements, including legal services, call centers, and regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, and defense contracting. According to SecureAuth CRO Tom Smith, these expanded capabilities strengthen the company’s competitive position in these high-security markets. This move is in line with broader industry trends, as risk-based authentication solutions are projected to reach $5.41 billion by 2023.
Dhanapal notes that the technology goes beyond traditional multi-factor authentication: “This offering demonstrates our commitment to innovation beyond the traditional friction-filled, multi-factor authentication as the gold standard in identity verification. Our biometric continuous identity assurance augments our risk-based MFA by securing the entire session.”
The integration of SessionGuardian’s technology complements SecureAuth’s existing behavioral biometrics capabilities, which were enhanced through their previous collaboration with Exabeam on behavioral biometric security platforms. This latest acquisition reinforces SecureAuth’s position in the continuous authentication market, where demand has grown significantly due to increased remote work adoption.
