SecureAuth Patents Four Passwordless Authentication Solutions

SecureAuth has been granted four Patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). The patents were issued between May of 2021 and February of 2022, and primarily concern different authentication applications of SecureAuth’s behavioral biometrics technology.

The first of the four patents describes a “System & Method to Identify Abnormalities to Continuously Measure Transaction Risk.” In plain terms, that means that the system is able to analyze behavioral patterns to evaluate the risk level in a digital interaction on a dynamic and ongoing basis. The solution looks at context (such as whether or not an identity has previously been associated with a device), and can adjust the risk threshold in real time based on the nature of the transaction and the desired level of assurance.

The most recent patent similarly looks at behavioral patterns and device information, though it is designed for physical access control instead of authentication within a user session. The “System and Method for Rapid Check-In and Inheriting Trust Using A Mobile Device” enables touchless access at secure facilities, and turns a user’s mobile device into a trusted authentication token while using behavioral and biometric attributes to ensure that that device is in the hands of its proper owner.

The final two patents cover “Authentication and Authorization Through Derived Behavioral Credentials Using Secured Paired Communication Devices” and a “System and Method of Biobehavioral Derived Credentials Identification.” Both patents detail authentication methods that leverage a combination of behavioral and biological traits to create a derived credential that can be used for access control. That Biobehavioral credential is essentially a digital signature that is tied to a user’s unique behavioral patterns, and that can be used to log into various systems in a safe and seamless manner. The solutions can also act pre-emptively to prevent fraud if someone’s behavior deviates from what is expected.

According to SecureAuth, the technology in the patents has already been integrated into its core platform and its mobile authentication portfolio. In that regard, the patents help automate security decisions, and enable passwordless (and continuous) authentication for end users.

The news comes several months after SecureAuth’s acquisition of Acceptto, a behavioral biometrics specialist with its own extensive patent holdings. The demand for behavioral biometrics technology could climb as high as $9 billion by 2031.
