RealNetworks Unveils SAFR SCAN Access Control Terminal

RealNetworks is leveraging its SAFR computer vision platform to streamline access control. To that end, the company has released a new SAFR SCAN terminal that can be deployed at points of entry to enable contactless access with facial recognition.

SAFR SCAN is the first RealNetworks product that delivers first-party hardware and software in one integrated package. According to RealNetworks, the consolidated offering allows the company to deliver secure access control at a fraction of the usual cost for such a product. The first SAFR SCAN units are expected to arrive in May, and will be sold at a price of $1,199.

In terms of utility, SAFR SCAN is designed primarily for offices and other commercial spaces. Each unit can authenticate up to 30 people in a minute, with liveness detection to guard against spoofing. In that regard, the solution uses 3D structured light and RGB camera technology to make sure that the right person is present. SAFR SCAN is durable enough to be deployed outdoors, while the units themselves can be integrated into a broader corporate network or installed as standalone access terminals. All biometric data collected with the platform is encrypted, and is stored as templates rather than as visual images of individual faces.

“SAFR SCAN is custom hardware designed around SAFR – our fast, highly reliable, low bias, and compact computer vision platform,” said SAFR Computer Vision VP Brad Donaldson. “We’ve built SAFR SCAN to integrate seamlessly into a wide variety of access control environments to create a compelling, reliable, and contactless alternative that’s better and more secure than traditional methods like key cards.”

RealNetworks unveiled SAFR SCAN at this week’s ISC West show in Las Vegas, announcing that the terminal will be available through system integrators in North America. The company released the latest version of the SAFR facial recognition platform back in February.
