The Port of Palm Beach has implemented facial recognition technology to streamline passenger processing, achieving a new record on January 3, 2025, when over 1,400 passengers were processed before 10 a.m. The system, part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) broader biometric screening initiative, enables significantly faster customs clearance compared to traditional agent-based processing. This implementation follows similar successful deployments at ports in Dubai and Vancouver, where processing times have been reduced by up to 20 minutes per passenger.
The technology serves passengers aboard the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise, a vessel operating year-round from the Port of Palm Beach. The ship offers 2-, 3-, and 4-night cruises to Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, with capacity for 1,308 guests at double occupancy and up to 1,680 passengers at full capacity. The port processes approximately 400,000 cruise passengers annually alongside its cargo and private marine operations.
Recent infrastructure improvements include the introduction of self-parking facilities and a designated area for ride-share services adjacent to the cruise terminal. A temporary pedestrian walkway has been established between vehicles and the cruise ship, with plans for a permanent structure featuring an overhead weather-protective canopy. These improvements align with broader maritime facility modernization trends that emphasize both security and passenger convenience.
“We’ve worked closely with Palm Beach Parking to ensure our parking operations are as smooth and safe as possible,” states Michael Meekins, Executive Director of the Port of Palm Beach. “With their team of attendants on hand to direct passengers, we eliminate any confusion on entering and exiting the premises, and provide a safer, faster, and more organized environment for everyone.”
The facial recognition system is part of CBP’s comprehensive biometric exit program, which has been gradually expanding across U.S. ports of entry. The technology matches live facial scans against existing passport photos and visa images, allowing for rapid verification of passenger identities while maintaining high security standards.
Additional planned improvements include new sidewalks, signage, pavement resurfacing, striping, minor landscaping, and new fencing installations. These upgrades are expected to further enhance the port’s efficiency and passenger experience as cruise tourism continues to grow in the region.
