PlayStation Mandates Age Verification for UK and Ireland by June

Sony Interactive Entertainment is requiring adult PlayStation account holders in the United Kingdom and Ireland to verify their age through a third-party service powered by Yoti, with verification becoming mandatory by June 2026 for users who want to retain access to social and communication features.

Three verification methods are available. The first uses a facial scan to estimate age from a photograph. The second accepts an identity document, including a driving licence, passport, or national ID card. The third uses mobile number verification via SMS code. The mobile verification method does not involve biometric data. Yoti handles all verification processing and deletes facial geometry data immediately after a check is complete. Sony receives only a binary pass or fail result and does not collect or store facial geometry.

Users who do not verify will lose access to voice chat, direct messaging, party and group chat, YouTube and Twitch broadcasting, Discord integration through PlayStation, and in-game communication tools. Core gameplay functions, trophies, and PlayStation Store purchases remain accessible without verification.

The rollout is widely interpreted as a compliance measure under the UK Online Safety Act’s age assurance provisions. Sony’s PlayStation FAQ describes the geographic scope as UK and Ireland only, though GameSpot has separately reported that Sony has global expansion plans for the system.

Sony’s deployment relies on Yoti’s improved facial age estimation accuracy, which the company refined specifically as UK regulations took effect. The PlayStation rollout is among the most prominent implementations in an ongoing wave of UK platform age-verification pilots ahead of Online Safety Act enforcement that began in mid-2025. The approach mirrors that of Discord’s UK age verification trial a year earlier, which offered the same face scan or ID document options. Gaming-sector age verification under the UK Online Safety Act has been a growing compliance area since at least mid-2025, when Entrust and PlaySafe ID announced a digital identity partnership targeting the same regulatory requirement.

Users who verify via facial scan should be aware that Yoti, not Sony, acts as the data processor for biometric information, and that no facial geometry is retained beyond the instant of the check. Yoti processes all three verification methods for Sony’s UK and Ireland rollout.
