Discord Tests Face Scanning and ID Upload for Age Verification in UK and Australia

Discord has launched a limited trial of a new age verification system in the United Kingdom and Australia, requiring select users to confirm their age through facial scanning or government-issued ID uploads. The pilot aims to align with tightening regulations in both countries designed to protect minors from harmful or explicit online content. Users may encounter verification prompts when attempting to access content flagged by Discord’s sensitive media filter or when adjusting their content preferences.

The trial offers two verification methods: a real-time facial scan via the user’s device or an upload of a passport, driver’s license, or national ID. Discord states that facial scan data is processed locally on the device and is not stored or transmitted. ID documents, once verified, are deleted. Users receive a direct message confirming verification status, with options to retry or appeal in case of rejection. If a user is determined to be underage, their account may be restricted or banned, subject to review.

The trial is a proactive step toward compliance with the UK’s Online Safety Act, which requires robust age verification measures by July 2025. It also anticipates the implementation of Australia’s proposed social media ban for users under 16, scheduled to take effect in December 2025. Although the system is not yet widely deployed, Discord is among several platforms experimenting with new age assurance tools in response to mounting legal and public pressure.

Privacy and civil liberties groups have raised concerns about the reliability and risks of biometric age verification. The Open Technology Institute (OTI) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) warn that current facial estimation technologies can produce false positives and may erode user anonymity, particularly for marginalized communities. UK-based Big Brother Watch has also cautioned that such systems are not a cure-all and may lead to digital exclusion or censorship.

Discord maintains that its system is privacy-centric and compliant with data protection laws such as GDPR. The company uses third-party vendors to process verifications; reports from users indicate that providers include Veratad and k-ID. While Discord asserts that biometric data is not collected or stored during facial scans, privacy advocates stress that even temporary handling of sensitive data introduces risks.

In the United States, age verification laws are also under scrutiny. Several states have passed legislation requiring age checks for access to online content, but legal challenges are mounting. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to review these laws in 2025, with potential implications for free speech and platform regulation nationwide. Discord’s trial, though focused abroad, reflects a broader global shift toward age assurance amid increasing scrutiny of online safety practices.

The platform’s move also follows a lawsuit filed in New Jersey alleging Discord failed to protect minors from abuse—further intensifying pressure on the company to demonstrate responsible content moderation and child protection mechanisms.

Despite the push toward age verification, concerns persist about accessibility and accuracy. Regulators in both the UK and Australia have found that many underage users are active on Discord despite self-reported age restrictions. Critics argue that requiring valid IDs or compatible devices may exclude some users and that facial recognition remains an imperfect solution, especially across diverse populations.

As Discord and other platforms navigate these challenges, the debate over balancing digital safety, privacy, and inclusivity remains unresolved. While the company’s pilot marks a step toward compliance, the broader question of how to enforce age restrictions without compromising civil liberties continues to fuel regulatory and industry debate.
