Pakistan Launches First Digital National ID Card in Major Tech Milestone

Pakistan has launched its first “dematerialized digital identity card”, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s digital transformation journey. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) announced the development during its Silver Jubilee ceremony today, representing a major advancement in the country’s identity management infrastructure.

The new digital identity system builds upon NADRA’s recent implementation of nationwide biometric services and follows the organization’s 25-year evolution from traditional identification methods to cutting-edge digital solutions. This latest innovation comes after NADRA’s successful launch of enhanced biometric features for child identification certificates earlier this year.

Pakistan’s digital transformation efforts have shown remarkable progress, with IT exports reaching a record $3.223 billion in FY 2023-24, representing a 24 percent increase. The country has also achieved significant growth in broadband penetration, now serving over 139 million subscribers, while training more than 600,000 individuals in digital skills through the DigiSkills.pk program.

The dematerialized digital identity card integrates advanced security features and builds upon NADRA’s established biometric verification infrastructure. Its launch aligns with the broader Digital Economy Enhancement Project (DEEP), which aims to expand digital infrastructure and boost IT exports.

The World Economic Forum has previously recognized Pakistan’s progress in digital identity systems, noting how digital ID has become fundamental to daily life for Pakistani citizens. The new dematerialized format represents the next evolution in this ongoing technological modernization.

As part of its comprehensive digital transformation strategy, Pakistan has also finalized National AI & Semiconductor Policies and adopted a Cloud First Policy across various provinces. The country is preparing for 5G implementation through planned spectrum auctions and the National Fiberisation Policy, further strengthening its digital infrastructure.
