Nuance Expands DAX Partnership with Rush University Medical Center

The Rush University Medical Center is expanding its use of Nuance’s Dragon Ambient Experience (DAX) to improve clinical workflows for doctors practicing in 14 areas of specialization. The decision was made following a successful pilot program, and will cover fields like otolaryngology, plastic surgery, urology, and orthopedics.

DAX itself is an ambient clinical intelligence (ACI) solution that allows doctors to use their voice to take notes in a clinical environment. The platform eliminates paperwork and lowers the administrative burden on physicians, which in turn reduces burnout and allows doctors to spend more time with patients. Rush found that the solution allowed its doctors to see more patients at its clinic during the trial period, while Nuance indicated that patient throughput is up 38 percent for other healthcare providers that have integrated DAX into their workflows.

“The clinical documentation burden has long been a pain point for our clinicians, making it difficult to bill and code accurately, which is an important piece of revenue integrity,” said Jordan Dale, the Acting Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Rush. “Nuance DAX allows us to fill the gaps in the patient narrative and improve clinical documentation by providing more complete and accurate notes.”

“The growing adoption of our clinical documentation solutions shows that we are on the right track to help transform care access, outcomes, and reimbursement accuracy,” added Nuance EVP and Healthcare General Manager Diana Nole.

DAX has conversational speech recognition capabilities, and will not generate any records without the full consent of the patient. The platform debuted in February of 2020, and has since been installed by healthcare providers like Providence and Monument Health. Nuance also integrated DAX into Microsoft Teams in response to COVID-19. Doing so allowed doctors to take advantage of the solution during telehealth sessions in addition to in-person clinical appointments.
