“…with this latest certification from the UIDAI, which administrates Aadhaar, NEXT’s fingerprint sensors can be used with modules and readers in the Aadhaar ecosystem that are based on Android operating systems.”
An important new certification should help to further extend the use of NEXT Biometrics technology in India’s enormous biometric national ID program: The company has announced that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has certified its Level-0 (L0) Registered Device (RD) Service for Android.
The development essentially means that NEXT Biometrics will have a bigger role to play in Aadhaar, the world’s most ambitious biometric national ID program. NEXT Biometrics’ fingerprint sensors were approved for use in Aadhaar applications this past June; now, with this latest certification from the UIDAI, which administrates Aadhaar, NEXT’s fingerprint sensors can be used with modules and readers in the Aadhaar ecosystem that are based on Android operating systems.
In a statement announcing the certification, NEXT Biometrics asserted that “Android devices, such as Android-based point-of-sale (POS) terminals, are currently used extensively throughout India for Aadhaar transactions,” suggesting that NEXT Biometrics technology will have a growing role to play in Aadhaar’s expanding payments infrastructure.
To encourage third parties to support its UIDAI-certified solutions, NEXT Biometrics has also launched the “NEXT L0 RD Service” microsite aimed at helping them to integrate support into their own devices with documentation, RD Service downloads for Android and Windows, and other support.
The news arrives after NEXT Biometrics received its first Aadhaar orders in August, further adding to its momentum in this important market.
