NEC de Colombia is teaming up with Smart Engines to develop a biometric onboarding solution for the Peruvian market. The solution will combine Smart Engines’ document reading technology with NEC’s biometric identity verification tech.
According to NEC de Colombia, the undertaking is a part of a major fintech project in Peru, although the company did not provide any further details about the endeavor. However, the resulting solution should ultimately accelerate digital transformation in multiple industries. The solution will support both desktop and mobile applications, enabling a secure remote onboarding process that minimizes the number of in-person visits that people need to make during the pandemic.
Smart Engines develops optical character recognition (OCR) technology that is able to extract personal information from an identity document when the owner takes a photo of that document with their mobile phone. The joint solution will then use NEC’s biometric technology to match that data to the person holding the device.
“We are confident that our experience and knowledge in the development of OCR technologies will help companies around the world offer cutting-edge, friction-less, smart and secure self-service solutions to their clients,” said Smart Engines CEO Vladimir Arlazarov.
“This technology, together with the advanced biometric identification and validation algorithms from NEC, offers an optimal and agile experience for citizens in their interaction with service providers, without giving up security aspects,” added Mauro Bianchi, the Country Manager for Peru at NEC de Colombia.
Smart Engines is based in Moscow, and has previously provided similar document reading capabilities for a separate identity verification solution from iDenfy. NEC de Colombia, meanwhile, is the Colombian subsidiary of NEC, though its territory includes a total of 12 countries in Latin America. The company has emphasized the importance of contactless biometrics and remote technologies in response to COVID-19.
FacePhi and Ipsidy are some of the other companies that are currently working to bring biometric onboarding technology to the Peruvian market.
