NEC has opened a new research center in Singapore.
Called the “NEC Open Innovation Centre”, or “OIC”, the facility will focus on technology research in the areas of public safety, aviation, and transportation. The technology itself will include artificial intelligence and biometrics. In announcing the OIC, NEC also highlighted its Trusted Digital Identity and One ID single token solutions in particular, aimed specifically at online identity and traveler identity applications.
Regional partnerships will also be a key focus for the OIC. The research center’s opening was supported with funding from the Singapore Economic Development Board, and in a statement announcing the development, NEC asserted that its OIC in Singapore “forms a part of the wider NEC innovation eco-system, and reaffirms NEC’s commitment to foster open innovation and partnerships with the private and public sectors.”
NEC added that the new OIC, its first research center outside of Japan, is part of a “$100 million investment over the five years from 2017 in research and innovation in the Asia Pacific region.”
NEC’s announcement comes after the conclusion this year of multiple trials of biometric and smart city technologies jointly organized between NEC and the Singaporean government, a program that started back in 2016.
